The school was established in 1946 as the New York Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, offering a program in technical career training. In 1953 it became the New York City Community College of Applied Arts and Sciences. In 1971 it absorbed Voorhees Technical Institute, and in 1980 adopted its current name.
